Cognitive-Behavioral Nosology
1970 - 1982
In the period from 1970 to 1982, research consolidated standardized screening and assessment as foundational for eating disorder science, notably with the introduction and validation of the Eating Attitudes Test, which enabled scalable screening and established a common measurement framework. Studies began to emphasize heterogeneity within anorexia nervosa and treated bulimia as a distinct trajectory, reshaping nosology and guiding later research on multiple illness pathways. Cognitive-behavioral approaches emerged as the predominant therapeutic paradigm, with early CBT programs for bulimia targeting eating control, avoidance, and distorted cognitions, and similar CBT strategies for anorexia nervosa influencing subsequent treatment development. Methodologically, the field integrated psychometrics, clinical observation, and early intervention trials, uniting assessment and therapy under a pragmatically oriented framework.
